WHEN YOU THINK OF A GREAT KING, WHAT DOES HE LOOK LIKE?
HOW DOES HE INTERACT WITH PEOPLE?
Jesus lived out a most beautiful, and anti-cultural tension when He, embodying the power of the all powerful God, took on the role of the lowliest servant.
In our scripture, Jesus takes a moment to reflect on his power and kingship. God has given him the ability to do anything that he wants to, and has established him as the great ruler of all. He is king that had been prophesied to come so many years ago, and the one and only savior. And, Jesus knows that soon He will be returning to His great kingdom to rein over the heavens and the earth. So, In this moment of understanding, Jesus stands. He takes his clothes off and wraps himself in a towel. He bends, down, the hard ground below his knees, fills his basin and places his hands on the tired, dusty feet of his disciples. And, when He goes to dry to feet of the disciples, he removes his last scrap of dignity - the towel around his waist - to complete this act. While realizing his great inheritance, Jesus humbles himself to the position of the lowliest servant. He becomes dirty so that his beloved may become clean. He sacrifices his dignity so that his friends may know that they are loved.
Only days later, Jesus humbles himself again for his Beloved. This time, He willingly lays down his life for us while we were yet sinners. He becomes dirty so that his beloved may become clean. He sacrifices his dignity so that his friends may know that they are loved. This passage ends by Jesus telling peter, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me,” knowing that at some point, Peter would have to accept Jesus for who He is, and for his great sacrifice.
What are the ways that you feel privileged? What are the things you do, were born into, or have that make you feel proud? Have you ever thought “I deserve this?” What were these circumstances? What would it look like to humble yourself in these situations? What might it look like for you to wash the feet of those around you? What could you do to look more like Jesus on this trip?
